EARTHQUAKE REHAB PROGRAMMES

REHABILITATION OF EARTHQUAKE DEPLETED LIVELIHOOD IN SIRAN AND KOUNCH VALLEYS OF DISTRICT MANSEHRA

Saibaan in partnership with Oxfam NOVIB implemented two years long livelihood rehabilitation project in eighth earthquake affected villages of target valleys. Main interventions were restocking of poultry and animals, infrastructure repair and development through cash for work, drinking water supplies, capacity building and skill enhancement and agriculture inputs and improvement etc.

FOOD FOR WORK AND TRAININGS WITH UNITED NATION WORLD FOOD PROGRAMME (WFP)

In partnership with World Food Program, Saibaan implemented a three months Food for Work and trainings project in four union councils of Siran and Kounch valleys.

 

 EARTHQUAKE RELIEF PROJECT WITH CRS (CATHOLIC RELIEF SERVICES) PHASE-I

SAIBAAN was the first non-governmental organization who targeted five union councils of Siran Valley in the immediate aftermath of the earthquake in collaboration with CRS. Winterized tents, blankets, plastic sheets, ,jerry cans and  kitchen sets were provided to affectees in first month. During the next three months, Saibaan managed to win the race against harsh winter by facilitating the target homeless affectees in installing the transitional shelters.

 

SHELTER DISTRIBUTION FUNDED BY IOM

SAIBAAN distributed 950 shelters in four Union Councils of Kounch and Pakhal Valleys in collaboration with IOM. The villages benefited were Shinkiari, Dhodial, Baffa and Battal.

 

DATA COLLECTION OF MISSING, UNACCOMPANIED AND SEPARATED CHILDREN IN COLLABORATION WITH UNICEF AND TVO

Right after the earthquake, Saibaan, in partnership with UNICEF and TVO, collected data of missing, unaccompanied and separated children. The two weeks exercise resulted in production of authenticated and reliable data that helped UNICEF in designing specific interventions targeting the children who were at most risk. 

 

DATA COLLECTION OF SPONTANEOUS CAMPS IN DISTRICT MANSEHRA IN COLLABORATION WITH IOM AND TVO

In collaboration with IOM and TVO, Saibaan gathered information on spontaneous camps present in Mansehra and hosting earthquake affectees. The information thus gathered was utilized by all three organizations to see ways of assisting IDPs in a more efficient manner.

 RELIEF CAMPAIGN BALAKOT

Saibaan organized free medical camps for IDPs based in Balakot provided them with post recovery humanitarian services.

COMMUNITY CONSULTATION FOR REHABILITAION OF IRRIGATION CANALS

Japanese bank for International Cooperation, have been working bilaterally with governments in past. It is first time in the history of JBIC, they have entered in partnership with an NGO all around the world. Saibaan assisted JBIC to come up with some findings from the local community for sustainability of irrigation channels in lower Siran and Pakhal valleys of Mansehra District which were badly damaged by earthquake of Oct, 2005. The findings helped JBIC, ERRA and Irrigation Department in designing of Mansehra Irrigation rehabilitation Project that repaired and rehabilitated two major canals namely Upper Siran Canal and Lower Siran Canal. Once the reconstruction project kicked off, Saibaan took up the responsibility of mobilizing farmers for their participation in monitoring and evaluation of the work being done. Throughout the project, Saibaan played a bridging role between farmers and the concerned department and managed to bring them closer.

  Strengthening Women Participation in The Rehabilitation And Reconstruction in Earthquake Hit Areas.

Saibaan initiated project in collaboration with Oxfam Novib (financial support of Oxfam Germany) to empower women of the target area to enable them to take part in socio economic activities and thus play a productive role at household and village level. By implementing this project Saibaan focused to involve women in activities aiming at their capacity building and informal networking of women and in the process paving way for encouraging women to participate in reconstruction and rehabilitation activities. 

Gender Based Sustainable Livelihoods Improvement and Revival Project

Gender based sustainable livelihood improvement and revival project was a study project implemented in village Bagroo of union council Hilkot. The project was focused on the most vulnerable and poor target hose holds to bring improvement in their lives. The main objectives of the project is that the women in the target communities have enhanced their management capacities to operate their groups in an efficient and sustainable manner and targeted communities are actively managing their business to contribute in their family income.

Youth Friendly Centers (YFC).

Establishment of Youth Friendly Centers project was funded by United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). This one year project was implemented in 3 villages of 3 Union councils in district Mansehra. After the earthquake these villages were one of those areas which were not properly addressed by NGO/INGOs as their attention was mostly on the hilly and high altitude areas of Tehsil Mansehra and Balakot. In that scenario Saibaan chose these villages for the establishment of Youth Friendly Centers as the youth were facing different challenge especially reproductive health. The cultural constraints and unavailability of a suitable plate form for these youth to discuss and address the issues of reproductive health were the major hurdles for the youth to overcome them. Saibaan took an initiative by providing them not only a suitable plate form but also a conducive environment to gather and discuss youth issues openly in peer groups. Different activities executed at these friendly centers played a vital role in shedding away their hesitation to discus these issues and adopt preventive measures

Women Friendly Spaces (Hunar Kada)

 The Women Friendly Spaces project is also being implemented by Saibaan with the funding sources of UNFPA and Oxfam Germany. This one year project aims to provide a safe and supportive environment for young females and girls, that offers protection and opportunities for development. The main objective of the project is to increase acceptance of ARH as an essential area to be addressed by the communities, enhance and improve health seeking behaviour among the young females, increase access to youth friendly health services offered at or through WFSs and other service delivery points,  improve access to ARH information and education, increase participation of young people in decision making and program implementation and promote gender equality among communities and awareness raising on women and youth rights.

Livelihood Improvement Via Empowerment (LIVE)

Care International funded livelihood recovery project is being implemented in Tehsil Balakot. The project is focused on the income generation, skill enhancement and infrastructure rehabilitation for the target communities. The main objective of the project is to improve access to livestock and poultry services for the vulnerable communities of target villages of Tehsil Balakot and build their livestock and poultry management skills, to improve income levels of target beneficiaries through agricultural rehabilitation and to impart income generating skills to community members of the target villages of Tehsil Balakot. Most of the activities are women focused to bring them in decision making, control and income enhancement of the house hold.

Community Based Livelihoods Recovery Project (CBLRP)

Saibaan Development Organization is implementing  a capacity building and skill enhancement  project under the  Community Based Livelihood Recovery Program (CBLRP) with the collaboration of UN International Labour Organization (ILO), the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the United Nations Organization for Industrial Development (UNIDO). The trainings are arranged in four batches of four months each in different potential locations of different union councils of Tehsil Balakot.
